Having a well trained, obedient dog means that we can keep our canine companions under control and safe not just for our dogs but for other people and canines in public as well. We want our dogs to look to us for guidance and direction rather than making their own decisions. When dogs are making their own choices they tend to be the wrong ones that end up getting them either in trouble or danger. This is why we need our dogs to be under control in all circumstances and scenarios, not to be the boss but because they live in our world and we have better knowledge of it!
TOP COMMANDS THAT ALL DOGS SHOULD LEARN
PERFECT LOOSE LEAD WALK
This way, you can go ANYWHERE with your dog, walk them nicely, and you don’t ave to stress that they are going to pull you over or lunge towards someone else.
SIT
This is a critical command for any dog to know. It is important that you can have your dog sit quietly and patiently when you need them to. When your dog is in a sit they are also in an implied stay. Obviously your dog should not be moving if they are in a sit.
RECALL
If anything happens and the dog is not on a lead, they need to have a fantastic recall back to you. This will only happen if your relationship and focus are spot on. You need to be more important than whatever other thing your dog wants to chase. The reason this is so important is to keep your dog safe, other dogs and people safe. This is extremely important if your dog becomes loose near a road.
LEAVE IT
“Leave it” is an important command to teach your new dog or puppy. Maybe they are chewing on something they might hurt themselves with? Or something they aren’t supposed to have? Either way, this command will make sure you can get the object without a fuss. It is also great for when you are playing or if your dog wants to chase something. This command covers so many areas, I believe it’s an absolute must.
“FREE, BREAK, FINISHED” Whatever term you want to use. Your dog should always know the difference between when he is in work mode or “Free” mode. This command lets them know when the command has ended and he can get up to do other things. It is essential to release your dog from commands, so they know there is a clear beginning and end to the behavior you are asking them to do. You can use whichever word you prefer as long as you are consistent. Don’t change from one to another.
